Quito, Baltra and Puerto Ayora This page is about the beginning of the trip. The flight from Quito via Guayaquil, travelling from Baltra airport to Puerto Ayora on the island of Santa Cruz. I was relieved to make this flight and to get away from the awful altitude sickness I always seem to get in Quito. Also the Charles Darwin station at Puerto Ayora where there are a lot of tortoises including old George who is the last of his species. I was glad to see that he was still hanging on though. It will be sad when he and his species become extinct. They are breeding a lot of tortoises at the station with the intention of repopulating the islands with them.
